Daniel 8 – Commentary

Some content of this post has been brought into question.  See this article.

I have posted my fairly in-depth commentary on Daniel 8Open Link in New Window.  Take a chair, and study carefully.

1In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. 2And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.

3Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

I believe the “came up last” part is referring to the fact that Iraq was attacked first and Iran will be last.

4I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

I believe this chapter is talking about the United States, Iraq, and Iran. I believe the United States to be grecia (v20-v21), or he goat, and Iraq/Iran to be media and Persia.

5And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. 6And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.

If you look up the word “whole” in the Strongs, you’ll see that it’s talking about a very large portion of the earth, not necessarily the whole earth. I believe this is talking about US bombers going into Iraq and Iran, flying across the face of the whole earth. The majority of the war on Iraq was multi million dollar cruise missiles launched from battleships in the gulf, bombers, and fighter jets.

7And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

Iraq had no power to stand against the US. The war was basically a walk in the park for the US, especially considering the fact that they touched not the ground as stated above. Most of the international community was resisting the US in their desire to start a war with Iraq. Since the US is the only super power in the earth during this war, no one was able to stop them from doing what they wanted to do.
This is the same reference to the four winds of heaven as seen in Daniel 11:4Open Link in New Window.

8Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

I believe that the four horns that came up after it are the same four little kingdoms that come out of the ten kingdoms referenced in Daniel 7Open Link in New Window, specifically, out of the EU, which I referenced in Daniel 7Open Link in New Window.

9And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

And the little horn is the Anti-Christ’s kingdom (7:8,7:24).

10And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. 11Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. 12And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practiced, and prospered.

He waxes exceedingly great, and starts to exalt himself above the prince of the host, which I believe to be the Lord. Also, we know that the Anti-Christ, as stated in Daniel 9, 11Open Link in New Window, and 12, takes away the daily sacrifice. I’ll compile a list of verse references at a later date.
Daniel 9:27Open Link in New Window talks about the mid-tribulation cease of the sacrifice. At least that’s what I interpret that scripture to be.

13Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? 14And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

One of the saints in Daniel’s vision was asking how long it will take for the following to all be completed. Each item in the list below is bolded in the verses above.

  1. the vision, which includes 2, 3, and 4
  2. the daily sacrifice removal
  3. the transgression of desolation (or abomination of desolation)
  4. the treading under foot of the sanctuary of the temple.
1, 2, 3, and 4 combined will take a total of 2300 days. Whether those days are all together, separated by spaces of time, or whatever else, it doesn’t say. At this point, I’m just contemplating things on the scriptures above. I believe it is possible that the time frame is not necessarily linear.

Also take note that the sanctuary will be cleansed after 2300 days. Considering that the second temple was destroyed in 70 AD, I don’t see how it is even possible that this was fulfilled in 70 AD, because the sanctuary did not exist, and therefore could not be cleansed.

15And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. 16And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

Here we have Yashua telling Gabriel the angel to make Daniel to understand the vision, so that you and I will have a little more to go on. The fact that this is Yashua is a different topic.

17So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

Take note of the angel, in v17, telling Daniel specifically that this is vision is for the “time of the end”. So, this Ram and He goat is to be fulfilled in the last days. Iraq and Iran are the kings of media and Persia (near the Persian sea). So, if it’s to be fulfilled at the time of the end, and I’m right about it being the US, Iran, and Iraq, then we are definitely living in the time of the end.

18Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright. 19And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be. 20The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

21And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

1. In 1777, the War of Independence had already started. It was not fully underway, but it had begun. The first naval battle, which lines up with the G.W. vision, was in 1778. See American Revolutionary War for more information.
2. I believe the last great war is probably World War III.
So, it would appear that the first king is destroyed, and not the entire nation. In General George Washington’s Vision in 1777, he saw the war of independence, the civil war, and the last Great War that will almost overtake the US. But, at the end, God will give the people courage, and they will drive the enemy off the continent. Basically what I’m saying is that the US will never be completely destroyed, but will take a fairly heavy hit, that will remove it from being a super power, hence the horn (first king) being broken.

22Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

This verse seems to be indicating that the four little kingdoms that I discussed earlier shall stand up, but not by the power of that nation/first king (Daniel 11:4Open Link in New Window). In other words, by some other power they will be governed. Perhaps this will be the European Union? I have heard that there are ten sections, or kingdoms, to the EU, as discussed earlier, in the commentary on Daniel 7Open Link in New Window.

23And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 24And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practice, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

I believe that these transgressors are those who would fight in the midst of the EU, or against it. When that starts happening, the anti-Christ will come forth in the strength of Satan, and force everyone to be peaceful. Those who speak out against people’s sins will die, seeing that we will be considered the hateful. Good will become evil and evil will become good (Isaiah 5:20Open Link in New Window). As it is written, by peace he will destroy many (Daniel 8:25Open Link in New Window). Look out for those who say anything against homosexuality, religion, etc.

25And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

In II Thessalonians 2:8Open Link in New Window, we have Paul talking about the anti-Christ being destroyed at the brightness of Christ’s second coming. In Daniel 7:9Open Link in New Window, it talks about the thrones (kingdoms) of this world being cast down.See v25 for the phrase, Prince of princes? Who could that be? Could it possibly be Yashua? I think so, I don't know of any other prince of princes, do you? I also believe that the reference to being “broken without hand” is a direct reference to Christ’s second coming. Yashua will destroy the anti-Christ at the brightness of His coming, thereby destroying him without hand.

26And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. 27And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
